I would have to say that after reading the Pantheon readings
that my favorite mythology God has to be Apollo. His motto of "know
thyself" and links to beauty and order were something that rang very
important to the culture at the time and even now. He helped bring reason to
Greece along with Athena, which would go on to be the building blocks of many
laws, setting the standards for social customs and the arts in Greek society. I
also find it very interesting with his origins being possibly from Asia that he
was so well respected in the culture as he was. You would never expect a
culture so proud and almost arrogant as the Greeks to allow an outside to come
in and set the tone for their culture in the way that Apollo did through their
mythology, which at the time was along the lines of truth.
Know thyself is one of the best lines in all greek mythology and one that certainly could be used today. Interesting that it comes from Apollo's oracle at Delphi because the Sun god is perhaps the cruelest gods!
ReplyDeleteI really liked Apollo too after reading about all the Gods. I too found it interesting about his origins but I guess that goes to show how much we didn't know about mythology before!
